What Is Open Water and Who Is It For?

The SSI Open Water Diver course is the full diving course to get certified and start diving as an independent diver. It comes in both Adult and Junior versions.

Open Water Diver (15+ years old)

With this certification, you can dive to 18 metres and dive with a buddy who has the same certification or a higher one.

It gives you a solid base to dive in other destinations, join dive trips, and keep progressing with specialties.

Junior Open Water Diver (10–14 años)

It is the same programme, adapted to their age so they can do it with confidence and at a good pace

Open Water certifies you to dive to 18 metres. For students aged 10 or 11, the limit is 12 metres, always with an instructor, divemaster, or certified adult.

It is a great option if:

You want the full certification from the start.

You want to dive and have more freedom and more options on future trips.

You are coming as a family, your child wants a scuba certification, and you want structure and safety too.

Why Do Your Open Water Course in Lanzarote?

To learn to scuba dive in Lanzarote is already a good plan in itself, but Playa Blanca makes it even easier. You have volcanic underwater scenery, great visibility on many days, and calm training conditions that really help when you are learning.

There is also plenty to enjoy from the start. During the dives, it is normal to see schools of fish, and around the rocks, moray eels and octopus.

And because Open Water includes several dives, you are not just trying things once and moving on. You have time to get used to the water, feel more comfortable, and enjoy the whole experience more and more with each dive.

This Is What the SSI Open Water Diver Course in Lanzarote with Dawn Dives Looks Like

The course usually takes 2.5 to 4 days and is split into three parts: MySSI online theory, pool training, and 4 ocean dives. That way, you learn step by step and with time for everything to make sense.

You do the theory in the MySSI app, with academic sessions and quizzes. To get certified, you need to complete all academic sections, from 1 to 6, and then take a final exam.

Here is what you learn:

  • Pressure and ears, how to descend properly and equalise.
  • Basic safety, continuous breathing and controlled ascents and descents.
  • Equipment, what each piece is and how to use it.
  • Dive planning, depth, bottom time and no decompression limits.
  • Dive computer, how to understand it and use it.
  • Navigation, including basic compass work.
  • Marine life, how to behave underwater and what to avoid.
  • What to do if something feels difficult, and how to stay calm.
  • What you can do after the course, and how to keep progressing as a diver.

In the pool, we practise the Open Water skills until they start to feel natural and do not need too much thinking.

Here is what you practise:

  • Setting up your equipment and doing the buddy check before getting in.
  • Breathing comfortably through the regulator.
  • Removing, replacing and clearing your mask.
  • Recovering the regulator if it comes out.
  • Controlling your buoyancy with your BCD, weights and breathing.
  • Doing controlled descents and ascents with good technique.
  • Sharing air and using the alternate air source.
  •  Practising routines and hand signals so everything feels more organised underwater.

The idea of the pool is simple: when we go into the sea, you already feel comfortable with the important things.

In the sea, you do your 4 training dives, and that is where you bring everything together. In each dive, you keep practising and improving the important parts, but now in a real environment.

Here is what you work on:

  • Preparing your equipment and doing the full check before getting in.
  • Safe entries and exits.
  • Controlled descents, communication and hand signals.
  • Buoyancy control during the dive.
  • Basic navigation, including compass use.
  • Safety procedures and what to do if something does not go as expected.
  • Controlled ascents and safe habits at the end of the dive.

And yes, because you do several dives, you also have time to enjoy diving in Playa Blanca, not just focus on the exercises.

Your Open Water at Dawn Dives: Done Properly

Open Water is your foundation as a diver. And a good foundation is not built in a rush.

At Dawn Dives, we are an SSI Instructor Training Center. In simple terms, that means we do not just train divers, we also train dive professionals. And that shows in the way we teach: we prepare you properly, so you finish the course as a confident and responsible diver.

That is why we do not let the small things slide. A proper buddy check, a hand signal at the right moment, a calm controlled ascent. Those are the details that make all the difference underwater.

We are based in Playa Blanca, inside the H10 Rubicon Horizons Collection, with our own facilities and well maintained equipment. Less hassle, better organisation, and a stable team that knows the area really well.

The People Behind Your Open Water

Behind this course there are many years in the water, big life changes, and a very clear way of seeing diving.

Some of us have always been close to the sea. Others left jobs, countries, or old routines behind to end up doing this.

What we all share is the same idea: diving should be taught properly, but always in a close and personal way.

Hervé

I discovered diving more than 36 years ago, in a demanding environment, and I still believe a good foundation makes all the difference.

Pepe

What I enjoy most is seeing someone go from doubt to confidence and start feeling truly comfortable in the water.

Óscar

The sea has always been my place, and I love being there when others start discovering what is waiting below the surface.

Rinus

What started as holidays with a mask and snorkel ended up changing my life, and I still enjoy every day I get in the water.

Claudia

Here I found a way to bring together many things I love: teaching, languages, meeting people, and living close to the sea.

What the Reviews Say

In diving, one thing matters more than any promise: the experience of the people who have already done it.

If you want to know what an Open Water course with Dawn Dives really feels like, the most useful thing is to read the people who have already done the course with us.

That is where you get the real experiences, what students say, and the things that come up again and again: how we teach, how we look after people, and how the whole course feels from start to finish.

Cancellation and Changes Policy

Just so everything is clear, and there are no surprises, this is how it works:

  • You can cancel 24 hours or more in advance and get a full refund.
  • Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance are non-refundable.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Open Water SSI Course in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

We work with small groups so there is real attention and the course feels comfortable from start to finish.

We run courses from Monday to Sunday. We usually start between 08:30 and 08:45. On the first day of the course, we always start at 08:45.

The confined water part of the course takes place at the H10 Rubicon Horizons Collection in Playa Blanca.

It usually takes 2.5 to 4 days, depending on your pace, the planning, and the conditions.

Yes. The theory is done through MySSI, so you can complete it online, at your own pace, before or during your stay.

That depends on your pace. You do it on your phone, little by little. If you get some of it done before your trip, you arrive more relaxed, but it is not essential.

Yes. MySSI is usually available in different languages.

You need to feel comfortable in the water. We do a basic assessment at the start.

Usually, no. You just need to complete the medical questionnaire. If you answer yes to any question, you may need medical clearance or a certificate before diving.
You can download the questionnaire here: [link]

The water temperature changes depending on the time of year. We give you the right wetsuit so you stay comfortable.

Swimwear and a towel. If you have something personal that makes you feel more comfortable, like your own mask, bring it along.

Yes. We have facilities so you can get changed and be comfortable before and after the course.

That depends on the sea, the visibility, and the group. We choose dive sites around Playa Blanca that work well for training and are also enjoyable to dive.

Safety comes first. We adjust the plan, choose a more protected site, change the order of the course, or rebook if needed.

We do not force it. If you run out of time because of your schedule or the conditions, we can rebook the part that is still missing, depending on availability.

It is not recommended. As a general rule, leave at least 12 hours after a single dive and 18 hours if you do several dives. A lot of people leave 24 hours just to be on the safe side.

You are insured during the course. If you dive often, some people choose to get annual dive insurance for extra peace of mind, but for the course itself it is not required.

With younger students, everything is done with structure: theory, pool, and sea. We move forward when they feel comfortable, and the priority is always a safe and positive experience.

It is the same kind of entry level certification and it is recognised worldwide. We teach SSI, but if you are comparing SSI and PADI, the main thing is choosing the option that best fits your trip, your time, and how you want to learn.

Yes, it can make sense once you already feel comfortable in the sea and the conditions are right. If it is something you would love to do, we can look at it with you based on your level and how many days you have.

Write to us and we will get back to you quickly. If you tell us your dates and whether you are coming with family, short on time, or starting from zero, we will help you see if Open Water is the right fit.
