What Is Scuba Diver and Who Is It For?

The SSI Scuba Diver certification is a great way to start diving properly without doing the full Open Water course just yet.

It comes in two versions depending on age.

Scuba Diver (For ages 15 and over.)

Same course, same goal: to finish with a certification and solid foundations.

Junior Scuba Diver (For ages 10 to 14)

It follows the same programme, adapted so the pace and the overall experience feel right for their age.

It is a great option if you want more than a try dive, but do not feel ready for the full course just yet.

It also works really well if you are short on time and want diving course that fits into your holiday, or if you are coming as a family and your child wants a beginner certification.

And if you are wondering, “Can I actually do this?” the answer is that most people can. It is not about being brave. It is about learning clearly, calmly, and one step at a time.

What You’ll See Underwater in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

One of the best things about doing your Scuba Diver course in Lanzarote is the setting itself.

In Playa Blanca, we dive over volcanic seabeds, along rock walls, ledges, and small caves, with schools of fish moving around you and plenty to look at from the very first dive.

It is common to see barracudas, seabream, and salemas, and on the seabed you may also spot angel sharks, moray eels, and octopus.And this is exactly why Lanzarote is such a good place for Scuba Diver.

The dive sites in Playa Blanca are ideal for learning calmly, with easy shore entries, clear water, and an underwater landscape that makes every dive feel special from the start.

SSI Scuba Diver Course in Lanzarote: What You Learn and How It Works

The course is designed to fit into a few days and is split into three parts: online theory, pool training, and 2 open water dives in the sea.

The theory for the SSI Scuba Diver course is done in the MySS app. It coversSections 1 to 3 of the Open Water manual and finishes with a final exam

You will learn things like:

  • How pressure affects your body as you go down
  • How to equalise your ears properly
  • Why you should never hold your breath
  • How to plan a dive
  • The hand signals we use underwater
  • How to set up and check your equipment before getting in

In the pool, you complete Sessions 1 to 3 of the SSI Open Water Diver programme. This is where, for most people, everything starts to click. You practise in a controlled environment until it begins to feel natural.

Here you practise things like:

  • Breathing comfortably through the regulator
  • Clearing water from your mask calmly
  • Recovering the regulator if it comes out
  • Controlling your buoyancy, so you do not keep going up and down like a lift
  • Moving properly without kicking the bottom or lifting sand
  • Doing calm, controlled descents and ascents
  • Practising routines and hand signals, so everything feels more organised underwater

If something does not work the first time, we repeat it. The idea is for you to get to the sea feeling more comfortable, not just hoping for the best.

The sea dives are Dives 1 and 2 of the SSI Open Water Diver programme. This is where you apply what you have practised in the pool, but now in the real environment.

Here you practise things like:

  • Preparing and checking your equipment before getting in
  • Entering and leaving the water safely
  • Doing a controlled descent and communicating underwater
  • Working on your basic buoyancy during the dive
  • Making a controlled ascent and building safe diving habits

This is where you put everything together and, finally, start enjoying the underwater enviroment too.

  • To book your place, we ask for a 50€ deposit by bank transfer, or we can send you a card payment link.
  • This deposit is non refundable because it includes the MySSI study materials.

  • You can cancel 24 hours or more in advance and get a full refund.
  • Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance are non-refundable.
  • For bookings that include a deposit, because it is a course or a specific activity, that deposit is non-refundable.
  • When we cancel for safety, weather, or operational reasons, you get a full refund.

Frequently Asked Questions About the SSI Scuba Diver Course in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

You should feel comfortable in the water. During the course, we do a basic water assessment to make sure everything is fine.

Usually, no. You just need to complete the medical questionnaire. If you answer yes to any of the questions, or if something needs to be reviewed, then you will need medical clearance before getting in the water.

 We run courses from Monday to Sunday. We usually start between 08:30 and 08:45. On the first day of the course, we always start at 08:45.

Scuba Diver is the shorter option. It gives you a recognised certification and lets you dive to 12 metres with a dive professional. Open Water is the full course and certifies you to dive to 18 metres with your buddy, without an instructor. If you have fewer days or just want to start with something more manageable, Scuba Diver can be a really good fit.

That is not a problem. If you run out of time, we can rebook the parts you still have left, depending on availability.

That depends on your pace. You can do it on your phone, little by little, whenever it suits you. If you can get some of it done before your trip, even better, but it is not essential.

 Yes. MySSI is usually available in different languages. If you want to do it in a specific one, just tell us when you book and we will sort it from the start.

The general idea is quite similar across agencies. We teach SSI. If you are not sure which option fits you best, tell us how many days you have and what kind of experience you are looking for, and we will point you in the right direction.

 We work with small groups, so the course feels easier to follow and much more comfortable. The exact ratio can vary depending on the dates and the level of the group.

The pool session takes place at the H10 Rubicon Horizons Collection in Playa Blanca. Depending on planning and availability, it may be on the same day as the sea dives or on separate days.

The water temperature changes depending on the time of year. We provide the right wetsuit so you stay comfortable in the water.

Ask us when you book and we will confirm what facilities are available that day.

That depends on the sea conditions, visibility, and the level of the group. We choose dive sites around Playa Blanca that work well for training and are also enjoyable to dive.

Safety always comes first. If the sea is not right for comfortable training, we move to a more protected site, adjust the plan, or rebook if needed.

The Museo Atlántico is a very special dive, but it is not always the automatic next step. It makes sense when you already feel comfortable in the sea and when the plan and conditions are right.

Just the basics: swimwear and a towel. If you have something personal that helps you feel more comfortable, like your own mask, bring it with you.

It is not recommended. As a general rule, people usually leave at least 12 hours after a single no decompression dive, and 18 hours after several dives or several days of diving. A lot of people prefer to leave 24 hours, just to be on the safe side.

 Insurance during the course is already included.

Yes. Scuba Diver is a step in between, and what you learn here gives you a solid base to complete the rest of the programme later on. If you want to continue, we can explain the next step towards Open Water clearly and with no pressure.

That depends on your time, your plan, and how far you want to go right now. If you want a shorter beginner certification that fits more easily into a holiday, Scuba Diver makes a lot of sense.

If you already know you want the full certification, Open Water may be the better option.
