What makes this dive so special
The Museo Atlántico in Lanzarote is a different kind of dive from the very start. It was created by Jason deCaires Taylor with a double purpose: to make something visually powerful and, at the same time, create an underwater sculpture park that would act as an artificial reef and bring marine life into the area.
That is part of what makes this dive feel so different. It is not only about what you see when you arrive, but also about the way the sea has been changing each piece over time.
The route sits on a sandy bottom at around 14 metres, and it mixes art, underwater landscape and marine life in a way that does not feel like any other dive on the island.

What you will see underwater at the Museo Atlántico
The Museo Atlántico is not only about what it looks like. As you move through the dive, you come across very different sculptures, with references to Lanzarote, the relationship between people and nature, and several social realities that the artist chose to leave underwater.
The more you know about what you are looking at, the more this dive makes sense.
Los Jolateros
This sculpture shows a very local Lanzarote tradition. It represents those children who, with a lot of imagination, turned oil drums into small boats to race in Charco de San Ginés.
When you see it underwater, it feels very special because it speaks about creativity, play and local memory.
Inmortal
Here you find a quieter and more serious piece, but one with a lot of weight. It represents a funeral pyre and connects with the old island tradition of cremating the dead.
It is not one of the most striking sculptures at first sight, but it is one of those pieces that makes you stop for a moment and look at it properly.
The Raft of Lampedusa
This is one of the most powerful pieces in the whole dive. Inspired by The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault, it shows 13 migrants on a raft and offers a very direct reflection on the refugee crisis.
Underwater, it feels even stronger, because it is not only about what you see, but also about what it makes you think about.
Disconnected
Very close to that scene, there is another one that hits in a different way: two people taking a selfie while, behind them, a tragedy is happening. It is a very clear criticism of the disconnection we sometimes have from what is going on around us.
It is one of those sculptures you understand in a second, but that stays in your mind for much longer.
Crossing the Rubicon
This is one of the best-known compositions in the museum, and when you see it, you understand why very quickly.
A group of 35 people walks towards an open doorway in a wall, showing in a very visual way the absurd reality of borders.
Underwater, it has a lot of strength and it conveys very well that idea of crossing, separation and searching for something on the other side.
Hybrid Garden
Here the tone changes a little and the route becomes stranger and more beautiful.
The sculptures mix human forms with cactus shapes, creating an image that feels very linked to Lanzarote and to the strong relationship between the island, nature and the people who live there.
It may not hit you through drama, but it definitely does through personality.
Portal
This sculpture feels more symbolic, stranger and almost dreamlike.
You see a horned female figure looking into a mirror that reflects the ocean, and that makes it stand out a lot along the route.
It is one of those pieces that people interpret in different ways, and maybe that is exactly why it works so well.
Deregulated
Here the criticism goes in another direction. Several suited businessmen are playing in a courtyard where money seems to be the only thing that matters, and the message comes across very quickly.
You do not need to overthink it to see that it is talking about priorities, systems and that way of looking at the world that sometimes leaves the important things out.
Human Gyre
For many people, this is one of the strongest images in the whole dive. A whirlpool made of 200 human figures creates a very striking scene underwater, while also expressing fragility, unity and that feeling that the ocean is always bigger than us.
It is one of those sculptures you do not only look at. You really feel it.
The result is not just a beautiful or curious dive.
It is a route with its own identity, where the art, the message behind each piece and the marine life that has appeared around it make the Museo Atlántico feel very different from any otherdive in Lanzarote.
